General Election Betting

General Election Betting in the UK is quite a complicated business these days, so if you are not a dedicated follower of politics, or political betting in general, I am going to attempt to explain the main markets involved if you are looking to place a bet on the UK general election.

General Election Betting Offers

When a General Election is called, there will be plenty of bookmakers offers available. As soon as any are live, we will have them here.

To win a UK general election outright and form your own government, a party would need to win 326 seats out of the 650 available, that way the party with 326 seats would always win any votes in the Houses Of Parliament, and therefore would get their legislation passed without relying on help from other parties. This is apparently known as democracy.

So if a party wins – lets say 300 seats – it would be the biggest party, but wouldn’t have an overall majority, and therefore would struggle to form a government. This is what happened in 2010, when the Conservatives won the most seats, but not enough to form an overall majority government.

Popular General Election Betting Markets

  • To Win Most Seats
  • Prime Minister After General Election
  • To Win An Overall Majority

To Win Most Seats Betting – This is simply a bet on which party you think will win the most seats.

Prime Minister After General Election Betting – Again, this is pretty self explanatory, it is simply a bet on who will be the Prime Minister after the general election. There is a possibility that it might not be the leader of the party that wins the most seats though. A coalition could be formed – by two or more losing parties – if they can command more combined seats than the biggest party. In this case, the coalition would appoint their own leader who would be Prime Minister.

To Win An Overall Majority Betting – This is a bet on a party to win 326 seats or more. If any party does this, they would have an overall majority and could not be outnumbered by any coalition, and that party would then have control of Parliament.

About General Election Betting

UK General Elections are generally held every four to five years, depending on when the sitting government wanted to call one. After the 2010 General Election, the Conservative and Liberal Democrats coalition government passed the The Fixed-term Parliaments Act 2011, which means that general elections have to take place every five years on the first Thursday in May.

This can be over ruled if Parliament agrees to have a General Election outside of the fixed term act, such as in 2017.

Who Is Favourite To Win The General Election?

At the moment the Conservatives are favourites to win the general election. Labour are the second favourites.
