The Top Leagues In Europe for Betting on Football

There’s never been a more popular period for betting on football

Every week on our UK television screens we are treated to the sight of some of European football’s most prestigious teams, and some of the biggest superstar footballers from across the globe.

At the moment the 4 most popular leagues for betting on are in Spain, England, Italy and Germany.

It’s a matter of debate as to who has the most popular league, and people do debate it. But I don’t think anybody would argue that those are the Top 4 leagues.

Bookmakers love the top European Leagues for Football Betting

From a bookmaker’s perspective, as these leagues boast the world’s best players, they attract a lot of interest from people looking to bet on football.

As a result, the bookmakers have all kinds of offers on to get our custom. These offers include money back specials and free bets.

And as these leagues are shown on television in the UK every week, we can also have a bet on what we are watching.

Best Leagues For Football Betting

For me, the beauty of these 4 leagues, is they all offer something different, and they are the best leagues for football betting. In alphabetical order (to avoid debate), here’s some reason why, alongside some facts about the leagues.

Bundesliga

The German league is the most efficient and arguably most passionately supported league in Europe.

The standout team in Germany is Bayern Munich, and in Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig, the Bundesliga has exciting teams attempting to chase down Bayern. Although to date, they have fallen fairly short.

I find the Bundesliga has a bit of the Premier League and La Liga in it. It has similar pace and power like you get in England, mixed in with great technical abilty, similar to what you get in Spain.

Bayern Munich are a popular team for betting on football

It is also becoming a popular breeding ground for young British players. Many players from the UK have followed the lead of Jadon Sancho and headed off the continent to further advance their careers.

The Bundesliga also boasts players like Erling Haaland, and Robert Lewandowski. Alongside Jadon Sancho, these players are all good for anytime goalscorer betting, or first goalscorer betting.

La Liga

Next we’re off to Spain. Up until recently La Liga fans and UK viewers were treated to the spectacle of Ronaldo and Messi fighting it out for their respective clubs, until Ronaldo shocked the football world and went to Juventus.

Even without the ex Manchester United striker, La Liga is still an exciting watch. It’s obviously going to weaken the product when you lose a player like Ronaldo. In fairness though, you are falling from a hell of a high perch.

La Liga is still hugely popular to fans and the football betting community alike. There are two of the biggest names in world football in Spain, Real Madrid and Barcelona. And I believe La Liga to be the most technically efficient football league in Europe.

Betting on Real Madrid

Spain also has the climate, culture and language to attract most of the top young stars from South America.

Just look at the players from that continent who have chosen to ply their trade in Spain over the years. We have seen the likes of Messi, Maradona, (Brazilian) Ronaldo, Sergio Aguero, Romario, and Neymar, to name a few.

And yes, I do know that Brazilians speak Portuguese, not Spanish!

Premier League

If you live in England you constantly hear that the Premier League is the best league in the world. Does this mean the best combination of players, fast paced football and crowds? Or just the best quality of football? I don’t know.

With my hand on heart as a watcher of European football, I couldn’t claim the Premier League has more passionate fans than Borussia Dortmund and some of their fellow Bundesliga teams, or even than some of the teams in Serie A, like Napoli, Fiorentina, Lazio, etc.

I certainly wouldn’t say that the Premier League has better quality football than La Liga either.

But when you add the speed, the ability of the players, the crowd, and the overall product together, I can see why people say it’s the best league in the world.

There are also some of the biggest household named teams in world football that are English.

Old Trafford Manchester
Manchester United are one of the biggest names in world football

The Premier League boasts the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham. In the case of Manchester United, they are a match globally for the two Spanish giants, Bayern Munich, and Juventus.

Alongside Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Juventus and PSG in France, the Premier League also boasts the biggest stars in world football.

Whenever a player emerges from a team outside of the above mentioned European teams, it’s nearly always the Premier League they are linked with, or come to. The Premier League is the place to be!

It is also a humongous football betting event with betting companies throwing huge resources at trying to grab as much of the UK market as they can.

Serie A

We can argue and debate who has the best league, etc, but I would say that Serie A probably comes 4th out of the 4. Sorry to any fans of Italian football.

Serie A does boast Juventus, Cristiano Ronaldo, AC Milan, Inter Milan, and is home to some serious footballing history, and huge legends of the game. But these days I believe it comes behind the Bundesliga, La Liga, and Premier League.

It was home to some boring, negative, defensive football, thankfully that has changed now. Serie A has a far more attacking brand of football these days. And although some of the defensive dark arts do remain, they are nowhere near as prevalent as before.

Just look at Atlanta, for the 2018/19  and 2019/20 season, they have not stopped scoring. They are on course to score 100 goals this season, their style of football is unbelievable.

If you told me a team from one of the top 4 leagues in Europe is likely to score 100 goals in a season, I would never have guessed Atalanta. And I would never have even considered it would be a team from Serie A.

With prestigious names like Juventus, AC Milan, etc, and players like Ronaldo and Lukaku, Serie A is a serious player in the world of football betting.

Italy does attract a lot of interest and attention, and yes, you do still get the odd bore draw. But you also do in all the other 3 leagues mentioned as well. And after all, there’s no Burnley in Italy, is there!

European football is the dominant force

European football is extremely strong at the moment.

Nations from this continent have now won the previous 4 FIFA World Cup. And there were even 4 European nations in the semi-finals back in 2018

Betting on football is now huge, and with the strength and dominance of Europe’s top leagues, that trend looks set to continue.
